Good morning from southeast Iowa.
I hope this finds our readers in good health and enjoying the early winter. My, I wasn’t quite ready for all of this. Maybe I never really get ready, it is earlier than most years. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have 6 or 7 ft. of snow and I hope we don’t need to find out.
As I wrote last time in June, 5 months ago, some of our help was quitting. We had 5 leaving, and the crunch was on the rest of us. Cody, David, Anthony, Stephen and Sarah Louise left in 2 ½ months’ time. Milk production was down over the time they only had 3 cheese makers, thankfully. We have more on board again and things are flowing more smoothly. Galen and Joseph are the only original cheese makers, there are also Jeff, Josh and Lucas. We are pleased with how they pitch in and take responsibility, it makes it easier on Galen. One difference, they are older men, not teenagers. The teenagers as a whole did well, but there is a difference. So the cheese making part is flowing smoothly again. Before long, they will again need to do some triple batch days. They are this week on account of Thanksgiving. They get to have Thanksgiving off and the Saturday after if they triple batch 2 days.
